With the world of broking being busy as ever, it’s crucial that brokers ensure they can deal with the stress of a constant barrage of phone calls, emails, and meetings. As heard on the Elite Broker podcast, we find out what brokers do to de-stress and unwind
Cricket & cooking
I play cricket. I love it so much so that I actually play cricket three days a week now. All my clients love that about me. I always tell them, even in our first conversation: “If you call me and I don’t answer, I’m either on another call or talking to my kids or playing cricket!”
But, I honestly don’t find my day-to-day broker life to be all that stressful and I think part of that is I enjoy doing it a lot!

But of course, cricket and cooking with my kids always helps and, from time to time, I’ll water my garden any time I need to just switch off.

Meditation
It’s still a work in progress, but I do try to find the time for myself. I probably meditate once a week and try to find some time for the gym in the middle.
I aim to get out of the office at 5pm because I want to spend time with my family, especially with two young kids at home. I want to enjoy these years.
This means I don’t work a lot of my weekends, that’s time for me to spend time with my family, try to find the odd time to go out surfing, get a bit of exercise, and try to socialise a little bit if I can.

Holidays & exercise
I definitely have to focus on taking a bit more time for myself these days, especially because I feel the bigger my business gets, the bigger the stresses get, which could lead to more risks and mistakes.
So, it’s important to try and take some time off, I’m absolutely guilty of taking some extended holidays and going overseas with my partner.
I’m also a passionate foodie, so on the weekends, I like to get some enjoyment out of going out with friends or cooking.
I know it’s a bit cliché, but exercising is also so crucial if you have a stressful job and to try and fit in that exercise with your work schedule. It helps you go into work with a clear head.

Walking the dog on the beach
For me, it’s walking my dog on the beach, it’s my favourite place to be. It’s the whole reason I moved to Christies Beach.
I try to do that every single day, get out in nature for a little bit, if it’s a beach or just somewhere where it’s peaceful to sit, relax, and unwind.
I also found that one of the key things to unwinding and de-stressing is that you have to learn how to let things go. You can’t fix everything. You can only do as much as you can and then you’ll just have to trust yourself that everything will be ok.
