BDM Spotlight: Darren Yow on Becoming a Leading Performer in Australia’s Competitive Private Lending Market

4 minute read

With four years of experience in SME lending, Darren Yow has quickly established himself as a standout Business Development Manager at Titan Capital — a leading private lender known for its flexible, fast-turnaround funding solutions.

Renowned for being responsive, solutions-focused, and relentless in pursuit of outcomes, Darren has built a strong network of broker relationships nationwide. In 2024, his dedication was recognised with finalist nominations at both the Australian Mortgage Awards and the Commercial Finance Awards in the Non-Bank BDM category — a testament to his impact and reputation in the market.

We sit down with Darren to learn more about his journey, his approach to building broker partnerships, and how he continues to drive results in a competitive lending environment.

1. How does the industry today compare to a few years ago?

The industry today compared to a few years ago is different. I can see that there is a shift in borrower expectations—speed, flexibility, and tailored solutions have become non-negotiable. With the rise of fintech and alternative lenders, the market is more competitive and dynamic than ever. Borrowers are also more informed, which means the value a BDM provides today goes well beyond product knowledge—it’s about relationship-building, problem-solving, and being a trusted advisor in real-time.

2. Congratulations on your recent success. What do you think sets you apart as a BDM?

Thank you! I believe what sets me apart is my commitment to consistency and responsiveness. I treat every broker relationship as a partnership, not a transaction. When a broker refers a deal, I make it a priority to respond promptly with no delays. Understanding their pain points, adding value proactively, and following through—especially when deals get tricky—makes all the difference. I also invest time in understanding not just our products, but how they fit into a broker’s wider offering and strategy.

3. What’s your favourite part of the role?

Without a doubt, it’s the relationships. Working closely with brokers and seeing their businesses grow because of the solutions we’ve delivered together is incredibly rewarding. I also enjoy the fast pace—no two days are the same—and the satisfaction of getting deals across the line that may have been too complex for traditional lenders.

4. What role has your company played in helping you reach this level?

I’m fortunate to be part of Titan Capital — a lender that genuinely understands the value of the BDM role and backs it with real support. From day one, they’ve provided the tools, autonomy, and flexible product suite I need to make informed decisions and deliver outcomes for my brokers. The internal culture is one of the biggest strengths: credit, settlements, and sales all work collaboratively, allowing us to move with the speed and certainty our brokers rely on. It’s a high-performance environment that empowers you to succeed — and it’s a great place to grow your career if you’re looking to make an impact.

5. For those considering a career as a BDM, what advice would you give?

Be curious, be proactive, and most importantly — be dependable. This role is built on relationships, and trust is your most valuable currency. It’s not just about knowing your product suite; it’s about understanding your brokers’ businesses and becoming their go-to problem solver. At Titan Capital, we’re empowered to do exactly that. With the right tools, fast credit access, and a collaborative internal team behind us, we’re able to consistently deliver on our promises — even in complex or time-sensitive scenarios. If you want to build a meaningful BDM career, surround yourself with a team that sets you up to succeed. That’s what Titan has done for me.

6. What would you say to someone thinking about joining your company as a BDM?

If you want to work somewhere that genuinely backs its people and empowers BDMs to deliver real solutions—not just talk about them—then Titan Capital is the place. You’re not just another cog in the wheel; you’re given a voice, and your input is valued. The team is experienced, supportive, and driven, which makes it an ideal environment to grow, succeed, and build meaningful relationships in the market.
