Aussie fears brand tarnish from NRL sponsorship

Staff Reporter 1 minute read

A string of NRL scandals has prompted Aussie Home Loans to question its sponsorship of the NSW State of Origin team – the Aussie Blues.

John Symond told The Australian Financial Review that what had happened in rugby league in the last week – namely the Matthew Johns scandal – was very worrying for Aussie’s brand.

“The reason you sponsor a sport or an athlete is to enhance your brand,” he said this week.

“At the moment rugby league isn’t enhancing our brand which is all about Australian, family and fun.”

While Aussie’s contract with the NRL does not expire until late next year Mr Symond said if it were up for renewal next week “we wouldn’t renew it”.

Mr Symond said he would not hesitate to invoke an early termination of the contract if such behaviour continued and he believed his brand was at risk.
