People Power

People Power

People make your business and they can break your business. Your team can set you free and they can send you screaming for the hills.

Highs and lows in business are inevitable when you consider the unexpected nature of people. The human element makes any business come alive – and it is how well your humans run your business systems that determine how alive your business feels to those most important, your clients.

Having systems in the first place is a given – your team need the framework and guidance to know what steps to take. Constant reminders and checklists are essential – no-one will remember your systems as well as you do. Communicating your overall passion and the importance of each person’s role in the business allows for staff engagement. Combine this with the freedom for staff to add their personal flair to the running of the system – and that is a recipe for riches, where you can reach the highs of a top performing business.

If you can successfully combine all the elements that drive a culture for staff to be focused and disciplined, yet free to enjoy themselves and add flair to their role – wow, that normally provides a beautiful outcome.

Problem is, even if you achieve it, it doesn’t always last that long – and people change – and people always look after themselves before their employer. The Australian entitlement to a “sickie” is a mentality still well alive in our employees’ minds. Your employees are not as strong or as committed as you and they never will be.

Document your employee contracts. Make them thorough when it comes to your clients, your referrers and your reputation. Get a lawyer to draft one for you to use as a template. It’s worth it. When things go wrong, that document is what you have to rely on.

Brace yourself. Hiring & managing staff is as tough as having children. They will surprise and delight you and they will let you down significantly. Shoot for the best but expect the worst. Prepare for it, plan for it, and hold on tight.

It’s a hell of a ride…
