Wellness November 2023: What do brokers do to unwind?

8 minute read

With the world of broking being busy as ever, it’s crucial that brokers ensure they can deal with the stress of a constant barrage of phone calls, emails, and meetings. As heard on the Elite Broker podcast, we find out what brokers do to de-stress and unwind

Escape to a home away from home

We try to get away. We have a place in the Hunter Valley. My wife and my kids like to go up there as often as we can, crack a bottle of red wine, sit by a cheese board by the outdoor firepit and let the dogs run around.

It has a different air to it. It’s almost like a little demarcation zone from Sydney. You get there and you just relax and don’t think too much about it.

So, that’s really what we do. Paula and I like to do quite a bit of travelling as well!

Family time, coaching and guitar

I’m at a very busy stage of life with young kids at the moment and I coach my son’s basketball team, which helps with some time away from the office.

I used to exercise a lot and have had more trouble doing that over recent times, but I still try to go for a run and go to the gym once, twice a week.

I like to play my guitar, too. If I’m really stressed, I’ll go into the study and just strum my guitar for half an hour or so and feel a lot better!

I also find that just going for a walk at the end of the day is a really good stress reliever. I’ll put on my headphones, listen to a podcast and walk for about 45 minutes.

Still working on it!

Health is something that I need to prioritise more, but I try to stay as active as I can.

I recently just got back from a big holiday, which was amazing, but I spent most of my time on the phone checking emails, and tried my best to make sure no one noticed.

I think for me I need to be a little bit more selfish in the best way possible and make sure I’m prioritising time for myself. It’s something we all need to be a bit better at, there’s a lot of things that we’re not doing as often as we should.

While my business has been very successful, I certainly need to spend some more time on myself.

It’s a work in progress!

Some help around the house

My cleaner’s my favourite person in the world! She makes my house look like a hotel every week.

That in itself helps with my stress levels because I’ll come home on a Monday and know what my house is going to look like.

I also like to go to the gym but it’s hard to carve out a bit of time for yourself because if it doesn’t happen early on in the morning, it’s not happening at all. It’s all about finding that time for yourself among kids, work and general life.
