SA government rolls out COVID stimulus package

The state has started distributing cash grants to businesses affected by density restrictions, including up to $22,000 boosts for eligible hospitality and tourism outfits.

Cash grants of up to $22,000, in addition to liquor licence waivers and payroll tax deferrals, are currently on offer for eligible hospitality and tourism businesses based in South Australia, with the state government confirming a range of support measures under a $40 million package.

The stimulus has included the Business Support Package, a grant for tourism and hospitality businesses, alongside gyms, with an eligible Australian and New Zealand Standard Industrial Classification (ANZSIC) code, or currently required to operate under one person per seven-square metre density restrictions.

The grant starts with an initial payment of up to $11,000.

For employing businesses and gyms with a turnover of less than $2 million, the initial payment will start from $3,000, while employing businesses with a turnover above $2 million could access $10,000.

Businesses within either of the cohorts that are based in the Adelaide CBD are eligible for a further $1,000.

Further payments of up to $11,000 are also available upon application, depending if businesses have seen their turnover slashed by 30 per cent during the two weeks from 27 December, compared to the 2019-20 financial year. Alternatively, they can compare to 2020-21 if they did not trade during the previous year.

The South Australian government has also offered affected hospitality and tourism businesses the opportunity to defer their payroll tax between January and March, with deferred payments due from April 2022.

Liquor licence fees for businesses that received JobKeeper payments under the second extension of the scheme from 4 January 2021, and saw liquor licence fees halved for FY21-22, will also see their remaining costs waived.

The package also has included the Business Hardship Grant, which is offering $6,000 for employing businesses that have had a 50 per cent turnover reduction in the two weeks since 27 December, compared to 2019-20.

The final measure is the Major Event Support Grant, which will provide $100,000 for cancelled or postponed events scheduled between 27 December 2021 and 27 January 2022.
