Major bank appoints group chief people officer

National Australia Bank has announced that KPMG’s current global head of people, Susan Ferrier, will become the group’s new chief people officer later this year.

Ms Ferrier, who is currently global head of people at accountancy giant KPMG, will take over the role of chief people officer from Julie Rynski, who has been acting in the role since March 2019.

Subject to regulatory approvals, Ms Ferrier will begin her new role at National Australia Bank (NAB) on 1 October 2019.

Ms Ferrier has previously worked as a chief people officer and in other similar executive roles for multi-jurisdictional business, both in Australia and abroad, including HSBC, Deutsche Bank, ING Barings and Barclays.

NAB interim CEO and chairman-elect Philip Chronican stated that he was pleased to see “someone of Susan’s calibre” appointed to the role.

“She is a deeply experienced human resources executive who has led large transformation and culture change programs, increasing leadership capability and engagement. Susan also has a passion for developing diverse and inclusive workplaces,” Mr Chronican said.

“This is a very important role on our executive leadership team and for our bank.”

He concluded: “To deliver on our strategy and to meet the expectations of our customers and the community, we must have the right culture and right plan in place to build the capability of our people and attract the best talent.”

The appointment comes just days after NAB announced Ross McEwan as its new group CEO and managing director.

Mr McEwan will replace interim CEO Phillip Chronican, who assumed the role following the resignation of Andrew Thorburn in February of this year, no later than April 2020, subject to regulatory approvals.
