Senior banker moves into broking

by Huntley Mitchell10 minute read

A banking veteran with more than 30 years’ experience in the financial services industry has successfully made the switch to mortgage broking by becoming a franchise owner.

Tony Versace became a RAMS Home Loans franchisee last November, moving on from his job as senior manager of broker and relationship banking at P&N Bank.

Prior to that, Mr Versace worked as the state manager for Western Australia, South Australia and the Northern Territory at ING Direct. He was also the state manager for WA at Smartline Personal Mortgage Advisers and has held various senior roles at CBA.

After 31 years as an employee, the Mandurah, WA-based broker told The Adviser he wanted an opportunity to work for himself in an area he enjoyed. It was also a chance for him to make a positive contribution to his local community.

“The transition to broking was relatively easy in terms of the banking aspects like products, policies and processes,” Mr Versace said.

“It was more of a challenge to establish referral partners and make myself known to potential customers.”

Mr Versace said he was looking to help more first home buyers enter the market, “as RAMS has fantastic products for these customers”.

“In general, we can find a product to suit most customers, and it is particularly easy when customers are honest and upfront around their financial situation, and have strong supporting documentation to support their loan application,” he said.

Mr Versace bolstered his team recently with the recruitment of another loan writer, and he plans to open an office in Mandurah’s CBD soon.

“This will be major step in promoting the brand,” he said.
