For the first time ever, the free bootcamp will unpack the entire SME lending journey and provide tips on how brokers can master the relationship with their clients.

The Adviser will host the ninth annual SME Broker Bootcamp in September, taking the event to Brisbane, Sydney, and Melbourne.

This year’s bootcamp will walk brokers through the entire SME lending journey from lead to settlement, all in one day.

It will be broken into four practical and stimulating workshops where participants will work in groups in order to be able to exchange knowledge and ideas.

While mortgage brokers strongly desire to expand into SME lending, this is often tempered by a fear of pushing beyond their comfort zone.

The SME Broker Bootcamp will arm brokers with the knowledge and tools they need to master their relationships with their SME clients and fulfil their needs.

Accendo Financial co-founder and partner Trent Carter will open the bootcamp with a bang, as he looks at the business model brokers can use to service all of their SME clients’ needs.

The commercial broker director will delve into how brokers can reinvest time back into their business by focusing on the ‘right clients’ and the ‘right tasks’, build a sustainable income flow, and ‘get off the commission rollercoaster’ by increasing their revenue per client.

Mr Carter – who is also the director of Provident Lending and Business Solutions – will present the workshop as the first part of three sessions focusing on the lodgement stage of writing an SME loan.

Using a real-life case study, Mr Carter will help brokers understand the client’s story, learn how to interpret the financials, and link it to the client’s long-term objectives and strategies.

The second part of the lodgement session will be presented by Stuart Donaldson and John Sgambelluri, the two other partners and co-founders of Accendo Financial.

They will expand on the case study and build an effective deal discussion paper so brokers can determine if it is a deal, explore appetite and funding options from potential lenders, build a foundation to transition into a credit memorandum, and transition to a client mandate letter and fee.

In the third part of the lodgement session, Mr Sgambelluri will unpack the fine art of crafting a compelling credit proposal by bringing the story to life.

He will outline the elements of a winning credit proposal that would present clients in the best light and help them access capital they need at the appropriate price.

Brokers will also learn how to minimise rework by foreseeing all the elements a lender would consider in a credit decision, and speed up time to gaining approval.

Mr Donaldson will return to the stage to moderate a panel discussion on how brokers could secure funding for SMEs in high-risk industries.

Brokers will gain insights into what is considered a high-risk industry, how top lenders assess and approve loans for high-risk SMEs, and how they could position their clients for loan success and find the right funding solutions for their clients.

Alongside this, the SME Broker Bootcamp bootcamp includes a two-part session on how brokers could realise the true value of diversification through nurture, and the financial benefits of meeting a client’s every need.

In the second part of this session, Mr Sgambelluri will detail how brokers could use a simple financial tool and historical data to help clients understand the pros and cons of their business decisions, and make informed decisions.

Throughout the event, brokers will have a chance to network with industry leaders and their peers, and hear from event partners in fireside discussions.

Mr Donaldson will also moderate a panel session on the latest trends and insights in private lending, how brokers could develop effective strategies for finding private borrowers and building their network, and how to identify red flags in cash flow analysis and avoid expensive mistakes.

Annie Kane, managing editor of The Adviser, said: “This year’s SME Broker Bootcamp is back with a bang - as we’re delivering a hands-on workshop experience taking broker’s the whole way through the business loan writing journey.

“Whether you’re a broker writing business finance for the first time, or a seasoned finance broker that just wants to learn new efficiencies and connect with the leaders in the SME finance space; this event will have something for everyone!

“The free-to-attend event is a fantastic opportunity to learn new skills, hone existing ones, and come away with practical knowledge that can help you build your business. But places are limited, so make sure you register to attend ASAP!”
