Young broker becomes franchise owner

One young and highly successful broker is now the proud owner of a branded broking business he has worked at for eight years.

Matt Cunliffe revealed to The Adviser that his recent purchase of Mortgage Choice’s Brisbane CBD franchise had been in the pipeline for a number of years, and was down to a matter of timing.

Mr Cunliffe said the plans for the business are in line with that of the Mortgage Choice group, which is to transition to a full financial services provider.

“At this point in time we offer residential lending, commercial and business lending, financial planning, personal loans and motor vehicle and asset finance. Our intention over the next 12 months is to focus on ensuring our clients are aware of the full suite of products on offer to them from our business to ensure we can maximise on revenue from our existing customer base,” he said.

“We want to be the brokers and advisers of choice for all of our client’s financial needs.”

Mr Cunliffe said he is always looking for ways to improve the service his business provides and to improve client experiences.

“I also enjoy taking change head on and feel that our adaptability allows us to move with the changes that are passed through our industry to ensure our clients are not affected, and in turn, enables us to do more business," he added.

A runner-up in The Adviser’s Young Broker of the Year rankings for 2014, as well as Queensland’s top broker at last year’s Better Business Awards, Mr Cunliffe said it is the business’ customer service proposition and his commitment to the role of a broker that has led him to become one of the industry’s rising stars.

To show its continued support of the broking industry's future leaders, The Adviser, in partnership with Citi, will host an exciting new event to celebrate the top 30 brokers under 30.

Brokers are encouraged to register early to enjoy a night of networking, socialising and celebrating as we announce the 2015 Young Broker of the Year.

Mortgage professionals of all age groups are encouraged to attend and join us in celebrating the successes of the industry's rising stars.

The Adviser editor James Mitchell said the new event is an exciting opportunity to support the industry’s future leaders.

“Young brokers have always been an important focus for us but over the last 12 months we have really been championing young brokers in an industry where most mortgage professionals are in their late forties and early fifties,” Mr Mitchell said.

“We realised that our annual Young Broker of the Year ranking – where we list the top 30 loan writers under 30 – should be celebrated by the broader industry.

“The Rising Stars event is the perfect opportunity to celebrate this year’s high achievers but also get out of the office and catch up with your peers.”

In today’s rapidly changing market, with layers of complexity and compliance being added to a broker’s daily workload, little time is spent celebrating what you’ve achieved, Mr Mitchell explained.

“The Rising Stars event is a great place to share your industry insights and gather new, innovative ideas about best practice with other young brokers,” he said.

“I look forward to seeing you all in November when we announce this year’s Young Broker of the Year.”
