Building approvals recorded a welcome improvement in February with multi-unit approvals increasing by more than 30 per cent.

Data released by the ABS yesterday showed a 7.8 per cent rise in building approvals in February.

Multi-unit approvals rose by a substantial 31.5 per cent, following six months of decline, and helped drive the overall increase.

Detached house approvals rose by a more subdued 0.5 per cent.

HIA chief executive Chris Lamont said the figures supported action taken by the government and the value of targeting incentives at the residential construction sector as a means of supporting economic and employment activity.
