Retail spending surprisingly strong

Australians spent a record $19.2 billion in January, indicating that the government’s $10.4 billion stimulus payouts continued to boost demand into the new year.

Data released by the ABS yesterday showed retail spending inched up 0.2 per cent in January from December, in seasonally adjusted terms.

This followed a 3.8 per cent surge in December after the government’s cash payments were first distributed.
