Broker Spotlight: Janet Jenner, Mortgage Choice

6 minute read
The Adviser

Janet Janner is a Mortgage Choice broker who operates in Byron Bay, Lennox Head, Lismore, Alstonville, Ballina and the Northern Rivers region

How long have you been a broker?

Ten years.

How did you get into the industry?

I had a career change from small business management to buying a Mortgage Choice franchise.

What are the advantages of broking in a regional area compared to the capital cities?

Broking in a regional area allows you to form some great relationships with your customers. You get the chance to create a name and reputation for yourself in the local area, making it much easier to generate word-of-mouth and referral business.

What are the misconceptions that city brokers have of regional brokers?

I think city brokers might think we don’t deal with many clients or that our median loan size is quite small. In reality, the reverse is true. We deal with a lot of customers from all different walks of life and, depending on their financial situation, they may be after a substantial loan.

What’s the biggest day-to-day challenge you face as a regional broker?

I would say it would have to be the distance. I have to travel at times to see clients, as most lenders require face-to-face meetings.

What’s the best thing about being a broker?

I find that helping clients achieve their goals and assisting them with finding the most suitable loan is very rewarding.

What would you be doing if you weren’t a broker?

I would like to think I could be a retired grandmother, but will wait to retirement age for that. If I weren’t a broker, I’d be a finance coach.
