FBAA calls for broker support

by Reporter10 minute read

The Finance Brokers Association of Australia (FBAA) is calling on brokers to support the industry body’s various recruitment strategies developed to increase the number of young brokers entering the profession.

Recently, the FBAA announced it had formed a relationship with Student Edge, which reaches more than 600,000 students across the nation, in a bid to raise the profile of mortgage broking.

FBAA president Peter White said while the lack of immediate income would no doubt deter some potential new recruits, he did not believe this was the primary reason behind the dearth of young people in the industry.

“It is certainly a part of the problem, but the main issue is the lack of awareness of the industry as a career choice [in] school leavers and graduates,” Mr White said.

“We can discuss the problems all day, but until we engage with our market, we’ll attract no one. The industry needs to step out of the shadows and be seen as exciting and prosperous. The FBAA is prepared to do that.”

However, Mr White said the issue of income still needs to be addressed, which is why the FBAA has been lobbying the federal government, Opposition and regulators for a new apprenticeship program.

“An industry-based apprenticeship program will provide a clear path of entry for new brokers, valuable training and a set wage. Participants in this program are our future broker market,” he said.

Mr White added that the apprenticeship model is close to being finalised and he wants the entire industry to get behind the FBAA’s efforts as “it will benefit everyone”.

“I read a lot of comments from various people with ideas, but we have started the process already and have our eye firmly on the goal, which is the industry’s future.”

The FBAA is establishing an industry steering committee to oversee progress of the new career-path initiative and is keen to hear from any member interested in participating.
