Young brokers share top tips on succeeding in industry

by Francesca Krakue10 minute read

The third-party channel’s most successful young brokers who made the 30 Under Thirty ranking for 2016 have highlighted the benefits of their age and offered other newcomers some key advice.

Speaking to The Adviser, Mortgage Choice’s Nathan Smith said that one of the biggest challenges he faced when starting out in the industry was a struggle with self-doubt.

“You doubt yourself when you’re interacting with clients who have more experience than you, or you think potentially may know more about property and finance than you do,” he explained.

In order to overcome this, Mr Smith’s advice to other young brokers is to build self-confidence by taking the time to thoroughly understand the products, processes, and “have a bit of assertion when speaking to clients.”

He also advised: “Align yourself with mentors and use them to build your knowledge bank faster. Learn from them and let them help you work out where to place a deal or understand policy.”

“Don’t be afraid to tell a client that you’re not sure and that you’re going to go and find out for them, rather than trying to bluff your way through it and give incorrect information,” he added.

Brendan Lowbridge of Investor Loans Network agreed that he initially found it “daunting” assisting clients who may have been “more than double” his age with what is often one of their biggest financial decisions.

However, Mr Lowbridge said that having solid mentors helped him find his feet in the industry, especially in regards to learning how to generate leads effectively.

“Now I only view my age as a benefit. I believe it brings a different level of energy, passion and enthusiasm that my clients really like,” he told The Adviser.

“I believe the stars are aligning for young brokers,” Mr Lowbridge said. “A career in broking is an exceptional choice for driven individuals who are willing to work hard and be patient for the first few years.”

Brokers under the age of 30 will be celebrated at a cocktail event next month, with the Young Broker of the Year for 2016 to be announced on the night.

The Adviser’s second annual Rising Stars event will take place at 6.30pm on Friday 18 November at the Marquee Boom Box at The Star, Sydney.
