Surprise results in Top 25 Brokerages list

by Staff Reporter10 minute read

This year’s Top 25 Brokerages list has thrown up several surprises, with five new entrants and nine firms coming from smaller markets.

The top three was unchanged from last year, with Aussie Home Loans again placing first, followed by Mortgage Choice and the Australian Lending & Investment Centre.

Loan Market climbed from fifth to fourth, while Perth-based Resolve Finance jumped from ninth to fifth.

The Adviser’s annual rankings were based on information provided by the brokerages for the 2013 calendar year.

Five criteria were used to judge the firms: average broker volumes; number of loans settled; value of loans settled; total book size; and book size versus years in business.

The Top 25 included eight franchise groups and 17 unbranded brokerages.

Five of the firms were new entrants: Iconic Home Loans, Alliance Mortgage Solutions, Easy Loans, Clarity Financial and Mo’r Mortgage Options.

More than one third came from outside the big four capital cities, with four based in Canberra, two in Adelaide, two in Darwin and one in Geelong.

The Adviser’s editor, John Bastick, said one notable feature of this year’s Top 25 was that most had recorded an increase in loans per broker.

“That reinforces the data that consumers are increasingly turning to mortgage brokers for their home loans,” he said.

“Brokers are independent experts, so it makes sense for people to consult them for important financial decisions, whether that’s buying a property, organising commercial finance or taking out insurance.”

Mr Bastick also hailed the impact made by brokerages from smaller markets.

“Some people make the mistake of thinking that the world revolves around Sydney and Melbourne,” he said.

“There are some cutting-edge businesses in places like Canberra and Darwin that deserve to be honoured for their innovation and customer service.”
