This month marks the return of National Volunteer Week (18–24 May 2026), where Australians are encouraged to look beyond the day-to-day and consider the broader impact they can have in their communities.

Run by Volunteering Australia, the event encourages people to get involved.

The theme – Your Year to Volunteer – honours the contributions of volunteers and invites Australians to make this year the one when they step up and make an impact.

Organisations are also encouraged to plan events or activities that best suit their teams and volunteers – whether it’s mentoring young professionals, supporting local charities, or contributing to community initiatives.

Those interested can visit the GoVolunteer website, contact their state or territory volunteering peak body, or approach local organisations to see how they can lend a helping hand.

Volunteering Australia’s CEO, Mark Pearce, said there are plenty of opportunities available.

“There is a diverse array of opportunities for people in Australia to volunteer within their community alongside something they’re already passionate about,” he said.

“Problems in community are best addressed in community, and volunteers are a big part of that.”
