What do brokers do to unwind?

With the world of broking being as busy as ever, it’s crucial that brokers ensure they can deal with the stress of a constant barrage of phone calls, emails, and meetings. As heard on The Adviser podcasts, we find out what brokers do to de-stress and unwind

I’m a huge Harry Potter fan. So I watch a lot of Harry Potter theory videos on YouTube when I need to unwind. I don’t even watch the movies anymore, I relisten to the audiobooks every so often, and then I’ll listen to a Harry Potter theory podcast, which is a 55-minute podcast just about topics like “was Sirius Black really innocent or was he psychotic?”

It’s the nerdiest thing in the world, but I do love it.

Father’s day

I’ve recently become a girl dad. I’ve got a 10-month-old daughter, so things have changed considerably. Getting home and spending time with her and taking over bathtime and bedtime is how I finish most days. That’s great because now I go home and actually switch the phone off. I never used to do that, but I definitely do that now because I want to give her full focus.

I also make sure that I do some kind of exercise every day. That’s a non-negotiable for me.

I think you need time to sort of step away a little bit from the day-to-day.

I’ve got a Harley-Davidson, and I love riding it. The last couple of years in particular, I’ve done a lot of kilometres on it. That’s my thinking time, and that’s super important to be able to get that.

I’m an Adelaide boy, and I’ve got a new place back on the beach there. So I try to break my months up pretty consistently. I do four weeks in Sydney and then a couple of weeks in Adelaide – that’s my six-week rotation. When I’m in Adelaide, that’s also my thinking time where I come up with ideas.

I truly think that trying to be balanced the whole time and not letting yourself get to a stressful place is the best answer. For example, I’m exercising just about every day.

I’m up super early, exercising before most people get out of bed. That’s a really big part of me, and I do a lot of that cycling with other people. It’s good physically, mentally, and socially. [And] I’m getting that before breakfast. It sort of keeps me on the level.
