Take a moment this May to think about what you can do to take a positive step to improve the health of one of your most important organs during Heart Health Week.

The Heart Foundation’s annual event runs from May 5–11, encouraging Australians to ‘Never miss a BEAT’ when it comes to heart health by starting a conversation with a loved one or booking in a Heart Health Check with their GP.

A Heart Health Check is a 20-minute check-up that assesses your risk of having a heart attack or stroke during the next five years, recommended for anyone over 45.

Heart, stroke, and vascular diseases remain one of Australia’s leading causes of death – someone experiences a heart attack or stroke every four minutes, according to the Heart Foundation. But Heart Health Week is a chance to get ahead of the issues.

David Lloyd, CEO of the Heart Foundation, said the organisation’s collective efforts have seen more than 850,000 Heart Health Checks delivered since April 2019.

“Together, we can work towards ensuring that heart health is achievable for everyone in Australia by 2050,” Lloyd said.
