Top Sydney firm continues expanding

by Nick Bendel10 minute read

One of Australia’s leading brokerages has announced plans to double its team of loan writers during 2014.

Home Loan Experts has increased its broker numbers from 9 to 14 in the past month and hopes to recruit another five writers later this year, according to managing director Otto Dargan.

The Sydney firm also boosted its admin staff from 26 to 33 during the same period and would like to add "as many good people as we can find", Mr Dargan told The Adviser.

“Compared to most mortgage brokers we have a lot of admin staff. This is so our brokers can just focus on packaging loans and working with customers,” he said.

Home Loan Experts placed 18th in this year’s Top 25 Brokerages list – up from 25th the year before.

That was driven by a 35 per cent jump in volumes from $220 million in the 2012 calendar year to $298 million in 2013.

“If we continue to hire people of the calibre that we have now then we'll have a fantastic culture, great results and a lot of fun too,” Mr Dargan said.

“We predominately hire new graduates so I've been giving career talks at colleges. However, our mortgage brokers are all experienced and hired from within the industry, so we're on the lookout for people that have the intelligence, drive and ethics to be a good broker.”

Mr Dargan told The Adviser that another focus for Home Loan Experts in 2014 would be to become a “social business” that focused on more than just making money.

He said the firm donates to several overseas charities and would expand its support if those charities could deliver results.

“Handouts have their place, but we're focusing on charities that give a hand up. In that way, we can create a long-term change,” he said.
