Loan Market’s Suzi Trajanovski loves her job, but says that in this industry you need a thick skin

What's the best thing about your job?

Being a BDM allows you to help your brokers and provide support and assistance, and a shoulder to cry on. You can help them grow their business, which is really rewarding.

What's the worst thing about your job?

BDMs are always on the road, which I love, but it does mean you have to do some emails and administration in the evening.

Have you faced any challenges being a woman in a male-dominated industry?

Absolutely. I’ve been in the finance industry for a long time. When I first started as a BDM for a lender, there weren’t too many women in the industry and I was seen as the ‘new kid on the block’.

What are the concerns you hear from brokers?

There have been a lot of new changes to current regulations, which have affected brokers. They have also had to complete their diplomas. Lead generation is another thing which is important to brokers. Loan Market is a big lead generation brokerage, and I love helping brokers get more from their business and their referrers.

What does a typical day look like?

Each day I am visiting my brokers, finding new prospects for our business and communicating with our Ray White offices.

What advice would you give young women entering the industry?

It’s a great industry; we need more women. It’s a lucrative industry for women and can be very rewarding and flexible.

What skills and qualities do BDMs need to succeed?

Patience and understanding. BDMs need to be adaptable to different people and different personalities. I think they need empathy – and a thick skin!

What attracted you to Loan Market?

I liked their value proposition in the marketplace. I believe that Loan Market is really cutting edge in what it provides to brokers, particularly in terms of support. You’re not a number at Loan Market, you care about the people you work with. There is a real family feel about the group. In April, I will have been with the company for five years – I have never looked back. I love my job.

If you weren't in finance, what would you be doing?

I would definitely be in a sales role somewhere. I like being on the road instead of being in an office environment day in, day out. I love being out and about and talking to people.
