BDM spotlight: AFM's Anna Graham

by Reporter10 minute read

Australian First Mortgage’s Anna Graham understands what brokers need – because she used to be one herself

What's the best thing about your job?

The people I get to work with are the best thing about my job. I left the industry for a couple of years and I just really missed the people.

What's the worst thing about your job?

I don’t really have a ‘worst thing’. I honestly love my job, the people I work for and the things I get to do. It is disappointing if a loan gets declined though.

Have you faced any challenges being a woman in a male-dominated industry?

You do face some challenges. This industry can still be very much a ‘man’s world’. I think that as a female, you really have to know your stuff to gain their approval and respect. Most of the men out there are great, but every now and then you do have to work a little bit harder.

What advice would you give young women entering the industry?

Be prepared for a lot of hard work. You have to earn the respect of others. That goes for any BDM – you have to earn respect. It’s not just going to happen. You have to be prepared to go out of your way to help brokers.

What are some of the concerns you hear from brokers?

Some brokers say it is a struggle to get onto their BDMs. In many cases, it is also getting harder and harder to place deals. A lot of brokers are also struggling with the extra requirements for study – which they question because they already have years of experience.

You used to be a broker, has this helped you in your role as a BDM?

Definitely, because I understand what brokers want and need from their BDMs. As a BDM though, you can’t rely on anyone. You need to know the products inside-out. You can’t just ring somebody up to double check. You need to be on top of your game.

What skills and qualities do BDMs need in order to succeed?

Listening skills would be right up there. You also need to be able to problem solve. I’d say you also need to be able to accept people as they are – people from all walks of life. You need tolerance. Being analytical will also help you be a good BDM.

If you weren't in finance what would you be doing?

I’m currently doing a Masters in wellness and a degree in nutrition, so I’d probably be in healthcare.
