I will have been a broker for 10 years in April next year.

How did you get into the industry?

I worked at ANZ for 22 years and I didn’t want to go higher within the bank to a more official role. I preferred to work in a more hands-on role, so I thought mortgage broking was a natural choice.

What are the advantages of broking in a regional area compared to the capital cities?

You have more of a ‘name’ operating in a regional area. Also, because you tend to see your clients after hours, the relationships you have with them are often more than just writing their loan.

What are the disadvantages of broking in a regional area?

The only thing would probably be your ability to rack up CPD points. Being two hours away from the closest major city means that I miss out on some of the events and functions put on by the banks and the associations.

What’s the biggest day-to-day challenge you face as a regional broker?

Like any broker, trying to meet deadlines with the time frames we have. Mind you, I think the turnaround times and one-on-one approach from banks is making it a lot easier than it used to be.

What’s the best thing about being a broker?

I love getting to know my clients and working hands on to help them overcome their challenges while having a bit of fun with them. I really enjoy working in a team environment too, and the job offers a lot of flexibility.

What would you be doing if you weren’t a broker?

I’d probably still be working somewhere within a bank.
